A young girl, she could be no more than seven weeks old, scurried across the cement floor of her Aunt's home. Wiping sweat from her eyes, she climbed through a hole in the block, landing on the other side in the presence of Liana. The middle-aged mouse was laying, frail and weak, on a makeshift bed. Azura had placed a wet cloth on the woman's forehead earlier, hoping to, at the very least, keep her beloved Aunt cool. Azura could tell that whatever illness Liana was haunted by -- the now-white mouse had been unable to identify the illness -- was slowly seeping the life out of her. Tears mingled with beads of sweat and her vision blurred. The girl shook her head, telling herself that she could not cry, that she had to be strong for her Aunt. Stepping wearily up to her dying mentor, the girl peeled the now warm strip of fabric from her Aunt's forehead and dipped it in a pot of cool water. She placed it back on the woman's head just as Liana's eyes opened, slowly. Azura hastily wiped the tears from her cheek and gave a forced smile. "How are you, Liana? Is there anything I can do?" The ill woman took a shaky breath before glancing up at her niece. She smiled, knowing that Azura already knew the answers to both of her questions, and shook her head, 'no', very slowly. The pure white girl took a deep breath, fighting back tears. There had to be something she could do. She needed to fix her Aunt - She should know how to, after all those weeks that Liana spent training her. Why, of all times, why must she fail her Aunt now ? Azura spun around to face the room, her eyes frantically pouring over every centimeter, desperately trying to find something that would save her Aunt. She racked her brain, trying to remember if there was an herb that could help. But she had already tried everything, and she had no clue what sickness she was treating in the first place. Four long days the girl had spent, trying everything she could think of to help her Aunt. Four days, and still, she found nothing. The best she had done was a cool, wet rag and some soup.
She felt a hand on her elbow, lightly tugging her. The girl turned towards her Aunt, panic-stricken. She knew the mouse could not endure forever - she wasn't getting any better. Her brown and white mentor smiled up at her. Liana was saying something, very faintly. Azura leaned down, tilting one of her ears towards the frail woman's mouth. She just barely caught what her Aunt was saying. "Do not be afraid, Azura. If it is my time to go, I am at peace with it. You have done your best, and I am proud of you for that. Never give up on what matters, sweet girl. That is the most important thing I could tell you. I love you..." The young mouse's eyes began to water again as her Aunt's voice faded to nothingness. She raised her head. Liana had closed her eyes, looking for all the world like she was asleep. But the mouse's chest was no longer falling and rising as it had before. Azura's throat closed and she gasped pointlessly, trying to draw breath. She felt the sobs racking her body, and yet she seemed detached from the world, like her spirit was floating above her body, watching the awful scene unfold. Tears poured down her face and she let out a dreadful wail, sobbing violently. She collapsed to the floor. "Not Liana, not Liana, not Liana! Please, give her back! I'm sorry! I'm sorry I failed you! Please..."
______________________________________________________________________________________ The mouse awoke with a jolt, shaking like a leaf from her spot on the floor. Tears poured thick and heavy down her cheeks as she took in her surroundings. She was laying on the white floor of the concrete block that her Aunt once lived in. She shook her head in an attempt to clear it. Why was she here? Had she not just switched to Woodtail, leaving behind the memory-filled cement block forever? Azura glanced at one of the corners, where a long forgotten pile of rope lay. Realization dawned on her as she walked over to the coil of rope. She had come down to her Aunt Liana’s former home to retrieve this very item, in the hope of finding a purpose for it. The snowy mouse must have dozed off in the middle of her task -- Lord knows she needed the extra rest. The young woman raised a paw to wipe away her tears. She hadn’t slept in several days, making her a virtual zombie, struggling to stay awake. The last time she had fallen asleep, she had been greeted with a similar dream - Her Aunt, dying slowly as Azura ran around frantically, trying to find a way to heal her. She had awoken from that just as traumatized as she was now. The girl hastily hefted the length of rope, anxious to escape the room where Liana had drawn her last breath. Everyone else - her mother, the mice who knew Liana - seemed to have recovered virtually immediately after hearing the news of Liana’s death. Azura did not hate them for it; she knew that the death of a loved one wasn’t typically met with such grief and ruin as Azura had presented. And yet, Liana had been all that the mouse had. Liana had been everything the girl had. Without the bi-colored woman, Azura would have nothing. Liana had taught her niece about healing. Liana had sheltered her niece when the girl became socially outcast. Liana had given her niece company when the girl had no one else to turn to. Azura shoved the lingering thoughts out of her mind, instead focusing on the heavy rope that she was now forcing through the hole in the wall. After she had pushed the last bit of it through, the mouse slipped through hole herself, landing gracefully on the other side with ease. Though the lady wasn’t particularly strong, her slim and petite frame gave her other advantages. With some difficulty, she gathered the rope back in her arms and set off, heading towards the winterheap. As Liana’s house had been a several yards away from the rest of Winterwhisker’s homes, this journey was necessary. Azura, her pained expression now replaced with a rather stoic one, had a vague idea of what she wanted to use the rope for. If the idea worked, she would have a real bed within a few days, instead of the pile of moss on a branch that she slept on. She stepped over a twig, almost dropping the bundle of rope in the process. God, did she hate being so tiny. 1156 | Briar | notes

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧
Ah, the main trading hub. An area where he could trade in the junk he found on missions to get slightly better junk. He loved it. For once in his life he wasn't about to go to grab a bit of alcohol, instead he actually wanted to take a look and see what he could find that wasn't of the drink variety. He had an old coin clutched in his paw and though he had no particular use for it he was sure that one of those genius Winterwhiskers would be able to find a way to make some fancy gadget out of it for sure. He would never understand how smart they were and how their brains could create such fantastical things.
Speaking of fantastical things...
Buckwheat noticed someone in front of him, heading in the same direction that he was. It was a tiny dot of a female and her size spoke of Wheatnose but he'd seen her around the Pine every now and again and out on foraging trips. He didn't know her name but with a colony and clan their size who would remember the name of someone they had only seen in passing? Still, whether he knew her name or not she seemed to be having a bit of trouble with that rope she was handling so, being the mouse that he was, he couldn't let her go alone without at least offering her assistance. So, he put a little pep in his step and caught her up though not before calling out, "Hey, miss! Miss! Do you need some help, there?" He'd be more than happy to carry the entire thing if he could.

Azura pushed on, about halfway to her old clan. The weight of the rope was making her arms tired and was slightly obstructing her field of vision, so high was the pile. She was just about to set down the burden and take a quick break when someone from behind her called out. She turned around, tilting her head upward a bit so that she could see over the rope. A tall buck with deep brown fur was approaching her. Azura, used to having people tower over her, was only slightly intimidated by his height. Since joining Woodtail the general height of those around her had only gone up, resulting in Azura straightening her posture as much as possible when around others so as to feel taller. She would try to stand a little straighter right now if it weren't for the worry that she fall over after such an attempt. The girl noticed that he had striking blue eyes, and couldn't help but smile at the sight of them. She usually felt like she knew someone a bit more if they had the same color eyes as she did.
The snowy mouse allowed the stranger to catch up to her before saying with a bit of a strain to her voice, "Yes, that would be very nice. Thank you." Unable to stand it any longer, the girl dropped the pile of rope onto the ground, and, breathing heavily, let her arms rest. Azura lifted a paw to her face self-consciously, certain that the lack of sleep and emotional strain was starting to show. The mouse before her appeared very healthy, and the girl couldn't help but notice that he stood at least an inch taller than her. She brushed some dirt off of her arm before glancing up at him and adding, "My name is Azura, by the way." She smiled up at the buck, momentarily forgetting about the trauma with Liana and changing clans. She felt extremely grateful and happy that someone had offered to help.

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain

The pale form of the doe turned to him when he called out to her. Besides the white fur he noticed that she had blue eyes like his own, interesting, and not un-attractive in his eyes. The little lady seemed absolutely exhausted from her efforts --or at least he had to assume that was what the tiredness in her eyes was from-- and he felt even better about hailing her and helping her to move the rope along. No one should have to suffer this much when moving things around... Speaking of, why was she moving this? Was she taking it to trade? Certainly it couldn't be her tool of choice with how huge it was compared to her? Nevertheless, the chocolate buck bent over to gather up the rope and clutched it in his paws, a feat easier obtained with his taller height than the smaller doe.
His voice, when he spoke, was grunted out slightly at the physical exertion of gathering up the item but that didn't put out the sound of friendliness and that hint of teasing that rang in his words. Hardly anything less than death could ever remove his playful tones. "No problem, no problem at all. Can't let this rope get the best of ya!" He grinned, his humor shining through as he tried to make light of the entire situation. Once he straightened back up with the rope in his paws he gave her a winning smile. "Call me Buckwheat! Or any variation thereof, I ain't picky." Azura, huh? He could see why she had the name, it fit those blue eyes very nicely. "Nice t'meet ya, Azura. Any reason why you're totin' around this big ole rope? Tradin' it for somethin' or...?" He trailed off, honestly quite curious to the know the answer to this conundrum.

The chocolate buck, so tall in Azura's mind, bent and hefted the pile of rope in his arms with much more ease than the doe had been capable of herself. She tilted her head slightly, wandering, not for the first time, how much easier life would be if she was only half an inch or so taller. She wouldn’t feel like the odd one out for example, and she wouldn’t have to crane her neck to look at everyone else, and picking up things would be so much easier. And, she thought, [/i] I wouldn’t have to have strangers help me do things…[/i] But alas, normal height was not her fate and she really ought to stop groaning over it. There was nothing wrong with her size. Besides, she wasn’t that small, now was she? When the Buck next spoke, he sounded jovial and playful, his voice not at all indicating the rope was so extremely heavy that he sounded strained. This made Azura feel slightly better about having someone else do her work for her, and she flashed a quick grin coupled with a light chuckle at his words. The mouse seemed friendly enough, that much was evident. After he gave his name, the doe gave another glance up at him. Buckwheat? It was a unique name, and yet she liked it. It sounded… She couldn’t quite think of a way to describe it, but the young girl liked it. As he tossed another question into the conversation, Azura gave a slight start and looked away. She had been staring. And of course he wanted to know what she was doing with something like this. ”It belonged to my Aunt, but she…” Azura’s eyes began watering again and she rushed on, ”Well, I was going to bring it back to my home, up in the pine tree, but I go right through the winterheap on the way there so I figured I’d stop by and say Hi to my mother…” The girl’s voice trailed off as she realized what a foolish idea this was. She did not need another yelling competition with her family right now, not while she was so vulnerable. She also realized that Buckwheat would probably start to regret his decision of helping her when he realized that she was planning to go farther than the winterheap. The buck probably hadn’t expected to be carrying such a weight all the way, and she wouldn’t blame him if he dropped the rope off at the market and went his own way. She would be thankful for him either way, and she new she really couldn’t expect him to go all the way tp the tree. Even he would grow tired after walking that distance. She stared at floor, feeling foolish and naive as she waited for some type of response from the kind buck. 489 | Buckwheat | notes

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain

Ah, a laugh! He was always happy when he heard such things, it was encouragement that the person he was speaking with was pleased with his jokes and that he could keep on keeping on if he wanted. Unless it was a pity laugh... but he didn't think that's what she was giving. What wasn't encouraging though was the way she seemed to start when he asked his question about the rope. Perhaps he'd overstepped his boundaries here... Still, she explained anyway with watering eyes and a rushed tone. He felt bad for her but it really was the way of life around here. One day you were alive and the next you could be sitting at the bottom of a cat's gullet. "I'm sorry about your Aunt but y'know, life's never promised with our kind. Just gotta keep on knowing that our loved ones are smilin' down on us from the stars. S'what I say!" He tried to give a reassuring smile, hoping he wasn't making the entire situation worse. He'd already come to terms with the deaths of his relatives and what would be the deaths of others he would get attached to in the future... it was easier that way.
Although he stopped to think about what the lady had just said... She wanted to stop in on her mother and say "hi" so that meant they'd be taking a bit of a detour. Though after a moment of deliberation he realized this wouldn't matter, she could say hi to her mother while he went on to trad with some willing folks. "Sounds like a lovely plan. I can help ya all the way to the pine. Y'see I was gonna take this coin," He indicated he coin which had fallen on the ground in his haste to help the little doe. "To the 'heap to trade so while you're talkin' to your folks I can do my tradin'. When you're done just come an' find me and I'll be happy to resume our little travel." Ancestors he would do anything to help a lady wouldn't he? Not that he honestly minded. She seemed sweet and a little fragile if the death of her aunt still bothered her. He found himself wanting to do what he could for her. "Of course, that is if ya could grab my coin for me. I haven't taught it to 'come' on my command yet, y'see." The teasing tone was back as he grinned, hoping to lighten her spirits once more.

The snowy doe gave a tight smile and a nod of her head as Buckwheat went on to comment on Liana and death. She knew he was right, the information was nothing new, and she knew that sooner or later she would be at peace with her aunt's death. But for now, Azura simply could put it behind her, try as she might. The girl had been far too dependent on Liana, she saw that now. Reflecting on the flashback-dream she had just had, the pale mouse knew that her Aunt's time had come and gone and it was high time that Azura learn to cope with that and live a little. Liana would have wanted that. And Azura would do anything for her beloved Aunt, even if it was too late. So, Azura thought, I guess it's time I finally learned to be social and pleasant. The girl arranged the most pleasant looking expression she could muster and made an attempt to relax her body a bit. An expression of surprise mingled with immense gratitude washed over the girl's features as Buckwheat told her that he would accompany her all the way back to the tree. That was extremely kind of him, and the girl had to admit she hadn't been expecting it in the slightest. As the chocolate buck continued, Azura sub-consciously bit her lip. Was there anyway she could veto visiting her mother without drawing attention to it? She really, really did not feel like facing anymore drama than absolutely necessary right now, and going up to her only parent would guarantee a huge pile of drama just waiting to happen. "Um you know, I'll just go with you, I don't really need to see her we just spoke a few days ago." Azura stared at the ground, feeling guilty for lying to the mouse. The last time her mother and she had talked was at least a week ago. And yet she did not feel like pouring out all of her problems onto the poor guy. He was doing enough already. "If you don't mind, I mean," With her gaze still stubbornly glued to the soil at her feet, she moved to pick up the coin he had mentioned. She toed the earth in a shameful quiet, before adding on, "Sorry for all the trouble, sir."

That tight smile of hers managed to morph itself into a somewhat pleasant look and then to gratitude when he offered his compromise. Though she seemed to completely disregard it and decided that she would wait to see her mother. The chocolate buck seemed confused, head tilting slightly to the left in puzzlement. Was it something he said? He didn't want to make her not see her mother, he'd feel awful about that. "But it's never a bad idea to see your folks again. Never know when you won't be able to again." He could always be counted on for the pessimism, even when he didn't mean it. "I don't mind, really." Now he would feel bad about dragging her around the market while he haggled for good prices, maybe he should just go later after he got her to the pine. Yeah, that would probably be better if she was insistent on not seeing her mother.
"Don't feel obligated on account of me to just go straight through. I really can keep myself busy while you visit her." Poor Buckwheat had no idea the real reason for her change of heart and he just wanted to be accommodating for a kind doe that seemed just a bit timid. "And really, you're no trouble at all. I've got nothin' else to do besides visit the 'Heap an' help you out." Speaking of... He gestured with his tail forwards, they should probably head towards there. He couldn't hold the rope all day, no matter what he said to the kind young lady. He was only mortal after all and if he waited too long the weight would start to weigh on him. "Maybe we should, walk'n'talk? Not that this rope's heavy or nothin', hehe, I could do this all day." He grinned, showing how truthful his words were... or somewhat truthful.

The girl pressed her lips together tightly as Buckwheat told her that they never knew when someone would pass. Azura knew this fact all too well, and yet she didn't feel anymore obligated to go visit her family. No, she would avoid them, for now at least. She could do with a good, long break from the shouting and breaking things, from the tears and guilt. The girl felt an unexpected surge of appreciation and affection for the kind buck. Here he was, doing everything he could to help out a complete stranger, and here she was, lying and confusing him and stars know what else. She felt like smacking her forehead with a paw, and yet she didn't, choosing to instead pass the coin she was holding to her other paw. She was so extremely awful at this whole 'social' thing. Azura couldn't help but ponder how everyone else did it and avoided hiding their face every other minute. Overall, she had accomplished more in the way of making conversation than she had in a while, which wasn't saying much. She didn't want to mess it up so early in. "Really, I'm sure she won't mind, and I'm not really sure she's even home right now. More often than not, she's off at some other mouse's home. Besides, I'm not sure I'm in the mood right now..." Her voice drifted off. At least that time she had been more honest. Her mother did spend the majority of her time away from the house, refusing to care for her children and instead enjoying herself by grabbing a drink or hitting it off at some buck's home. The girl mentally shook her head in shame, not knowing how her only parent could be so careless about, well, everything. She definitely did not want Buckwheat to know this about her dear old mother, not after she just met him. How would he look at her, if he knew? Would he shake his head just as she had almost done, would he claim that she was the offspring of a drunken and reckless one-night stand? Azura had no clue who her father was, all she knew was that he had died before she was even a week old. She doubted she could be much more proud of him than she was of her mother, and yet she liked to think that he was a brave, noble, and kind mouse who just happened to catch the eye of the wrong doe. She was broken from her cavern of thoughts as the buck suggested that they go ahead and move along. The doe felt her cheeks flush with warmth. They had been talking for a bit too long, yes, she should have started walking earlier. The poor guy, his arms were probably getting tired despite his assurance that they were not. She smiled at his last words, giving a relieved giggle because she knew how heavy that rope was and yet he didn't seem upset that he had been standing around for so long. "Sounds good to me," she chirped cheerfully. Indeed, he sounded as playful as ever. She began walking forward with a subtle bounce to her steps, hoping that everything would go smoothly from here on. Despite her better judgement, Azura decided that she would try and make conversation. "So," she said, walked over a fallen, green leaf, "Do you go to the market often?" The girl raised the coin to eye-level, observing it while at the same time being careful not to make a mis-step. She thought that Buckwheat looked slightly familiar, maybe she had seen him during one of her visits to Winterwhisker's homes before she changed to Woodtail. It was possible, but she wasn't surprised that she really couldn't recall a specific time she had seen him. There were too many mice within the colony for someone like her to keep track of. She hardly knew the names of forty mice, let alone all of them. She let her arm drop back to her side, abandoning her observations and instead returning her attention to the buck. 686 | Buckwheat | She's such a complicated little thing I apologize <3

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧
It seemed as if she was dead set on not visiting her mother and in that case he supposed he couldn't argue with her. It was her decision in the end and if she didn't want to do it then he wouldn't force her. "Well, if you're absolutely certain it's fine..." He wouldn't press and he wouldn't pry though he was certain there was something more there to be opened... She was still a stranger it was none of his business. He also had his own problems to worry about, like if anyone would want this coin. Maybe he should just cut straight through the place and head back to the pine. While she didn't want to drag him to see her mother he didn't want to drag her to the marketplace if she didn't have to trade anything.
His ears twitched as his thoughts were interrupted by the doe asking him a question. Ah, small talk, he certainly didn't mind that; social creature that he was. "Ah, y'know, every once in a while. With my job I'm asked to grab stuff for the lovely folks there sometimes... and every once in a while like t'day I have somethin' that I find out over yonder that I know someone'll want to trade for." Or something that he hoped someone would want to trade for. Though what was that plan before? To skip through the marketplace and head straight back to the pine? That seemed like a better and better plan, they could double back aftewards when the rope wasn't in his arms.
"What about you? Correct me if I'm wrong, miss, but... haven't I seen you out foraging before or at the pine? Are you a Woodtail, perhaps?" Nothing wrong with getting to know the person you were with and it kept his mind off of his arms and on the words instead. "'An, uh, I just got a great idea! What if we go to the pine first and then come back 'round to the market. That is, if you're fine with that?" He smiled at her, keeping his words still light. He was the one to offer after all and he didn't want to seem weak in front of the nice lady. Oh no, that wouldn't do at all. He would just make it seem like a completely unrelated reason, yeah, that was brilliant!

The young buck seemed to drop the matter of her mother, allowing Azura a small sigh of relief. That was one obstacle out of the way, her parents. The girl raised her paw to the wooden pendant hanging from her neck, running a finger over the smooth bird as she had hundreds of times before. It was the only item that she had of her father’s, an item she treasured greatly. The edges of the carved wood had once been more defined, but after ages of her running her paw over it, the corners and edges had rounded noticeably, making it seem as if it were softening as it grew older. She nodded her head slightly at Buckwheat’s words, acknowledging that she had heard what he was saying about the marketplace, however much her mind might be wandering. The snowy doe felt her lips tug upward, imagining the mouse beside her navigating the homes and shops of Winterwhisker as she had done before. Perhaps they had passed each other when she was younger. The chocolate man seemed to have read her very mind as he seemed to guide the conversation with apparent ease, voicing the question that had been lingering in the back of Azura’s mind. " Yes, you most likely have seen me here or there, assuming you live in the pine too? I switched to Woodtail coming up on two weeks ago -- I used to be a Winterwhisker. I must say, the tree does provide a fantastic wake-up view.” She smiled at her words, having enjoyed all of her mornings in the tree admiring the scene that stretched so far below her while she completed various chores. The effect was stunning, as she had set her home nearly a half a dozen feet in the air, on a friendly-looking and wide branch. The girl’s head swiveled back to Buckwheat as he threw his suggestion into the small-talk, and she found herself nodding in agreement even as she replied, " Sure! I don’t see why not,” She beamed up at him, quite frankly feeling proud of herself for getting along so well with a complete stranger. Sure, they may have had a slightly bumpy start, but the road seemed to be evening out from here. Remembering her original idea of making conversation, the pale mouse racked her mind, searching for the right thing to say.

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain

She confirmed his suspicions with ease, saying that she'd recently switched to Woodtail. He nodded his head in reply to her question, rhetorical though it might have been as all Woodtail's --or perhaps every single one except a few maybe-- lived at the pine. He couldn't imagine being anywhere else as that's also where his parents had stayed. He was an expert by now at climbing the huge tree and quite loved living among the branches. "Hell yeah it does! Best place to bed-down in the whole colony, I think." That was also one of the perks of the tree. You could see for miles from the branches and it was a great spot to watch all of the pretty goings-ons that good ole mother nature had to offer. "I'm glad to hear ya joined our little clan. You'll certainly get to see a lot of adventures and things with our group!" Which he always considered fun. Dangerous, yes, but to him that's where things became interesting.
"Fantastic, miss!" He was glad to hear that she agreed with his plans which meant it was settled! Pine first to her place to deliver the rope and then if she wanted she was more than welcome to join him back at the market. So, on they walked but he was quite interested in hearing more about her. "Are you liking it so far? I know the foragers' life isn't for everyone." Especially such small someone's who were fairly new but something must have drawn Azura to it. He wondered what?

The petite mouse nodded her head vigorously with a small grin on her face, showing just how much she agreed with the buck about the tree. She much preferred living there to the boring, cement walls of her Aunt's... Not that she hadn't loved living with Liana. She sighed inwardly, telling herself that it was okay, maybe even good, that she was enjoying life in the tall tree more. If she could accept that, it was one more step towards letting her Aunt go. And stars knew it was high time for that to happen. Just how long, she wondered, she would be like this about Liana, she did not know. But she did know that it wasn't healthy, to have her every thought haunted by this. Azura cleared her mind, wanting to focus on the conversation. Buckwheat went on to tell her about all the adventures she would be likely to experience with the Woodtails, and her mind immediately flashed to the adventure she had already been on. She smiled, laughing at herself for having been so nervous, remembering the three other mice that she had met, and reflecting upon the troublesome journey across the yard. Overall, she had been quite proud of herself for even considering setting out across that yard, but the fact that she had actually tried was even better. "Funnily enough, I've already been on one," she commented. It had been quite the experience. She bobbed her head slightly at his words, his enthusiastic response only increasing her good mood. Fantastic, huh? Azura rubbed her fingers across the coin without really realizing she was doing it, feeling the bumps and grooves cut into the metal. The pale doe tilted her head up at the chocolate mouse at his next question, feeling almost flattered that he had taken this aspect of her move into consideration. Her answer, of course, was obvious to her. "Are you kidding? I love it! I mean, everything from the constant chance for adventure, living in the pine tree, all the mice who surround me..." She cut herself off, knowing that she could go on listing things for a very long time. Life as a Woodtail had certainly exceeded her expectations, and she was ever so slightly envious of mice like Buckwheat, who had grown up and spent their whole life in the wonderful clan. That was assuming that he had been born into Woodtail and hadn't transferred there, of course, which was the more likely story. "I sort of wish I'd switched before now." She didn't bother to say that she knew she never would have, not while Liana was still holding her in Winterwhisker. The pale mouse would never have left her Aunt. Did that make her death a good thing? Her stomach twisted and she felt slightly disgusted with herself. How could it have been a good thing? How could the death of such a wonderful, such a perfect mouse be a good thing? Azura wanted to go on, battering herself for thinking such a thing, but she pushed the thoughts to a lonely corner of her mind specifically reserved for times like this. She would not bully herself over this.

Well, wasn't that interesting. The petite female told him that she'd already been on an adventure. He wondered what sort of adventure it was. Most likely a successful one since she was still here but the completion was only half of the story, it was the trials and tribulations of the quest that made it the most fun.
Buckwheat grinned sidelong at the little doe at her words. It seemed like she'd enjoyed the move a lot and he was honestly glad to hear it. Being stuck somewhere you didn't want to sounded like a terrible fate... Had that been why she'd moved in the first place? For some reason his mind was brought back to that aunt she'd mentioned. Maybe she had been a Woodtail and Azura wanted to honor her memory, or something sweet like that. It made him think of his own life and how he mostly only did things for himself in the pursuit of pleasure. He stopped thinking about it lest he bring his mood down the drain...
"I'm glad you're lovin' it! Yeah, we Woodtails know adventure for sure, right up to the places we sleep. It's all we ever think about for sure!" And he was only partly kidding. It was what got him up in the morning! Well, that and the possibility of good company and a good drink. He always enjoyed such things immensely. "Hey, not your fault you didn't know that it was so great with us. You're just gonna have to make up for the time you lost now! Say, here's an idea. Why don't you hang out with a true-blue Woodtail and go out searching for some good loot? Or maybe even a drink and some cookies." Eh, why not ask her out for a bit of fun. You only lived once and he wouldn't mind hanging out with a pretty doe and doing things that he loved. "Or I guess... hang out with a true-brown Woodtail." Here he snickered at his own joke before giving a wink at the lady.
He looked up ahead, through the rope that he carried and could see the tree coming into view. Thank the ancestors! He could practically feel his paws screaming out impatiently as they neared.

A bright smile flashed over the doe's features as she nodded along with his words. She'd never heard something so true. Winterwhiskers were fairly odd and bizarre, or so she had always thought. But the Woodtail's she constantly interacted with seemed to make her original clan pale in comparison. Her neighbors constantly amazed her with their seemingly carefree way of addressing danger - like they had faced such things so many times that it had become a way of life. Of course, there were a far amount of mice within the clan that were not like this at all. They were the more cautious, practical half of Woodtail. She wasn't sure which group she fell into quite yet, though the snowy mouse was determined to know sooner or later. They were now approaching the pine tree she called home. It would only be a moment or two more before the pair of them had reached its base. Azura's mind again fell into that pit of gratitude for the buck beside her, carrying her own load for such a distance. It was a favor she would have to repay some day, somehow. Her eyes wandered towards Buckwheat's face almost of their own will, just as he began speaking once more. The girl found that there was a little bounce in her step at the sound of his light and jovial tones. Her brow, however, creased ever so slightly as she began to fully grasp what he had just said. He... was asking her if she wanted to meet up with him again. Were her ears deceiving her, giving her something that her mind subconsciously had yearned for for the longest time? Buckwheat, so lighthearted and kind, was actually indicating that he enjoyed her and that he wouldn't mind if they spoke again. Her eyes twinkled with joy at this sudden realization - there was someone out there, excluding dead family members, who didn't find her odd or annoying or bothersome. She almost forgot to say anything in reply. She clasped her paws together, coin still in paw. Hastily clearing her mind of such childish thoughts, the girl stammered, "I... That sounds wonderful, Buckwheat!" At this point, the girl didn't care if he saw how ridiculously excited she was. Nobody had ever wanted to be around her for any longer than they had to be since she was a mere child. Azura had no friends, either now or as a child, though there was that kind old lady on the branch above hers. The idea that someone else wanted to be in any sort of relationship to her was a new one and one she was quite willing to embrace. A tiny little voice in Azura's mind was urging her not to over react, not to let the mouse beside her see that a few words out of his mouth meant the world to her. It was childish and made her look like a naive and innocent little thing, the voice said. The pale lady was caught between excitement and retreating back into her shell for a mere second before she shoved the tiny voice away. Instead, she allowed a smile to play on her lips at his last remark, hardly aware of tiny chuckle that escaped her lips. If the girl's steps had a slight bounce to them before, there may as well have been springs attached to her heels now. The pine was closer than ever, and Azura was quite content with the situation, knowing the buck would have his arms free of his heavy burden in a matter of seconds. 599 | Buckwheat | huge apologies for taking so long
