Little Honey Wheatnose scurried from her home over at the upside-down crate across the garden bed, looking for something. Actually, she was looking for someone. Huld, to be exact, the old mouse who was the elder of the Wheatnose Clan. In all honesty, the buck scared her to death, as he could be rather harsh and snappy, but his help and advice was crucial to her. Honey wanted to be a chef — the best chef in all the colony — so she often went to Huld to ask about cooking advice. What should I add to this soup? Should I use this berry or that berry? How much honey? And to help get him onto her side, she always brought him an offering of Honey Nutbread.
She was proud of this bread that she had made all by herself. No one had helped her make it. She’d slaved over her oven for hours, getting the recipe just right. Adding just enough honey, just enough peanuts and seeds, to make something both healthy, and delicious. And now it was her go-to meal. She always had plenty of loaves of it stocked in her kitchen, and they always disappeared quickly. She ate a lot of it herself, but so did other members of the colony. That’s why she had to keep making it all the time.
Finally, as she scurried along, she spotted the old buck, Huld, and took a deep breath. She pulled open her coin-purse satchel which hung on one shoulder and nestled across her front. She took a slice of bread from inside the satchel and then pulled it shut again, walking daintily up to the old mouse and trying not to tremble. “H-Hello th-there, Huld,” she squeaked, silently berating herself for stuttering. “I b-brought you some Honey Nutbread.” She gave him her best toothy smile, hoping he wouldn’t sigh and turn her away today.
